Hi, and welcome to our school. Starcross Primary School is a lively, warm and successful school situated in the busy estuary town of Starcross . We are extremely popular, and we are seeing many families choose us due to our location and facilities, and also due to the welcome that they receive from the school. We currently have 150 children in attendance.
The original building was built in 1837, from leftover stone from another building project that was being undertaken in Exmouth. The stone was brought over the estuary in barges, and then used to build both St. Paul ‘s Church and the school house.
Over the years the school has grown into what it is today, and today we are very lucky to have one class per year group in Reception and key Stage 1, and 3 mixed age classes in Key Stage 2. The mixed age classes are a recent addition, but this has not impacted on our service, and the children still get the very highest standards of education due to the great teaching and learning opportunities that take place on a regular basis.
The school site itself is fantastic, and the amenities on-site for the children and for parents and carers are exceptional.
The pre-school, which is run by a separate committee from the school at present, allows children of pre-school age to attend and prepare for their first year of full-time education. The experienced, friendly and helpful staff have a wonderful background in providing high quality learning experiences for the pre-school age, and it is very popular amongst new families to the area.
The links with the pre-school are very strong, and the teachers and support staff in both pre-school and the main school work very hard to ensure that the children’s movement into full-time education from the pre-school setting is as smooth and enjoyable as possible.
Although no longer a national requirement for schools, we still ensure that all children have the opportunity to
- Be healthy
- Stay safe
- Enjoy and achieve
- Make a positive contribution
- Understand the need for economic well-being
These are echoed in our whole school mission statement, which are summarised by the school motto “ Love School , Love Life.”
The children are taught the core subjects of Maths, English, Science and Information and Computing. They are also taught the Foundation subjects (PE, Religious Education, History, Geography, Design technology, Personal, Social and Health Education, Art).
All teachers and support staff involved in the education of the children ensure that the lessons are set to the individual needs of the children, and we have a great reputation for our intervention and support where there are special educational needs.
As well as a full and lively curriculum, the facilities for the children to use are highly attractive. These include:
- Recently refurbished hard court area / playground
- Swimming pool
- Fitness trail
- Extensive range of “Huff and Puff” equipment that the children can use at break times
- Sand pit
- Pirate ship
- Millenium garden, which consists of sensory area and allows the children to enjoy quiet, reflective time together
- Adjacent parish field (used in the summertime for playing, sports day, and in the winter for football club.
- Newly acquired sun / rain canopy which provides valuable shelter for the children from the rain and sun
- Newly refurbished nature area with planters and pond
- Cycle and scooter storage facilities.
The school is extremely lucky to have a very active Parents, Teachers and Friends Association (PTFA), who work extremely hard to raise money for various projects around school. These can vary from ICT equipment, to funding coaches for trips and providing specialised equipment for pupils who need it. They are always looking for new members to join the ever-growing family of school supporters, and please see the separate section on the PTFA for contact details of the chairperson, Mrs. Emma Wheeler.
