Welcome to Starcross Primary School
Hello there! Whether you’re an existing parent or carer, or simply interested in choosing the right school for your child, I’d like to welcome you to Starcross Primary School. I really hope that you’re able to get a feel of what we are about, just by coming to our website.
About Our School
Built in 1837, the school was originally designed for around 25 pupils. Now, after many developments and additions to the school, we’ve around 240 children here, including our wonderful preschool. We really do have it all here for your child and your family! If you want only the very best start to their school career, in an environment where everyone only wants the best outcomes for your child, then you’ve come to the right place.
We’re a popular, vibrant school with a real sense of fun, and our pupil numbers year-on-year really are the biggest indication of our reputation as a fantastic school - but there’s so much more for you to see, especially if you come and join us for a look around. As a Head Teacher, I always like to show the parents around personally, and if I don’t know any of the answers to your questions, I’ll always signpost you to someone much cleverer than me who can.
Our school is truly unique. We’re the biggest village school in the vicinity, and we are lucky to have single form entry, which means that your child will move through school each year with friends at the same chronological age. We have had mixed-age classes in the past, but we’re happy that we can offer this to any parent.
In terms of facilities and resources, we have lots to offer, including:
- wonderful play facilities, including a brand new playground;
- a wonderful swimming pool, that all classes can use, and which can be used all year round;
- a fantastic preschool setting as part of the school, which enables all children to begin their learning journey with the very best expert teaching and amazing learning opportunities;
- a great outdoor learning environment, including our nature area and wild garden.
- In this day and age, lots of tech is important, and all children have access to a huge array of devices and learning opportunities using technology.
- We have a scooter and bicycle storage on site, so all children and their families can be healthy for life;
- a superb kitchen, where lovely hot meals for everyone are cooked each day, by our highly professional caterers.
Our curriculum vision is simple. In line with our school motto “Love School, Love Life,” we want every lesson taught, every learning opportunity outside the classroom, and every piece of work done in partnership with others to be relevant, fun, exciting and enabling them to participate in the wide world long after they have left us.
Of course, numeracy and literacy are key requisites for any child. That said, we believe there is so much more to engage the children with. Whether your child is a musical, a scientist, artistic in other ways, or a lover of literature, our curriculum will cover it all. With our partnership with the South Dartmoor School Sports, there are always activities available for all children with a love of sport, too. We can provide tuition in most instruments, and we really pride ourselves on how we allow all children access to creativity, no matter what they want. We’ll always try to tap in to how your child learns best and provide them with learning which gives then every chance to not only think for themselves but prepare them for their next steps and beyond.
All children have different abilities and starting points, and we truly recognise this. Whichever end of the ability spectrum your child is at, and whatever additional needs they may have (we think all children have special educational needs), the school can guarantee you that they’ll receive all the support they need, and so will you.
Our staff? Well, I’m blessed as the head teacher to say that at every level, we’re such a wonderful team. Committed to our common goals of being the best we can be for your children, we’re always here to communicate, listen and learn from you as well.
In OFSTED terms, we’re a good school. We think we’re much, much better than that, though. Like all school, having been through the most challenging time in our history through the pandemic, we continue to provide a safe, welcoming highly exciting place, where your child will smile, have fun with their friends and learn at their own pace. We believe that school is a place where children can grow whilst trying out different versions of themselves, until they find the one that works for them. And here, they really do get that chance.
I hope that this will give you some idea of what we are like here at Starcross. Don’t take my word for it, though; please do the right thing if you can and come and have a look for yourself. You won’t be disappointed. I’ll look forward to seeing you.
