Years 4 & 5 Avocets
Welcome to our class page! My name is Miss Olivia Godbeer and I am the class teacher based in Avocets full time. We also have Mrs Tamsin Vanderford who covers my teacher time out of class. As classroom support, we have Mrs Lucy Grocock.

Literacy
In Literacy, we are focusing on the book ‘Ripley’s Mighty Machines’ and the end of unit outcome for this text is for each child to create an information page to include in a class book.
The children will be learning different skills including; writing in complex sentences, using relative clauses to add extra detail and using punctuation correctly to aid clarity.
Maths
Year 4 Maths
The first unit of work for Year 4 is learning about column addition, ensuring that the addends are lined up correctly and learning how to ‘regroup’ columns that produce sums greater than 10.
Year 5 Maths
The first unit of work for Year 5 is learning about recognising tenths as decimal fractions. Children will learn how tenths can be expressed as decimal fractions, how to count in tenths up to and beyond one and learning how to round tenths to the nearest whole number.
Geography
Our Geography unit is focused on children identifying the equator, hemisphere and tropics on Earth. The children’s end of unit outcome will be to create a labelled diagram of the different areas of the Earth.
Year 4 children will also be looking at Europe, including the names of countries and capital cities.
History
In History, we will have a quick recap of Ancient Egypt from last year and then move onto Ancient Romans and explain the similarities and differences between the two. We will focus on the achievements of the early civilisations and overview where and when these occurred.
Art
This term in Art, we are recapping on our drawing journey. The children will continue to build on the skills of drawing and the purposes it serves. The children will be encouraged to use their sketchbooks in an effective and individual way.
PE
Our PE topic for this term are: netball and tag rugby. Avocets PE days are: Mondays and Wednesdays.
French
In French this term, the children will be learning about different animals through a variety of activities: listening and speaking.
Music
We are following a scheme on Music Angels currently looking at the ‘What do we do with a drunken sailor?’ song. The children will first learn how to sing the song and then move onto adding instruments.
RE
In RE this term, we will be looking at the overriding question ‘What does it mean for Christians to believe that God is holy and loving?’ These sessions will promote listening and respect others beliefs and values. The children will work towards creating a poem to show ways in which Christians believe God is loving and holy.



RE
Last term, we looked at Christianity in particular the Holy Spirit and how this is viewed by Christians. This term we will be looking at the celebration of Pentecost and how this is celebrated in churches. We will have a special visitor coming in to work with us.
