Miss O Godbeer
Welcome to our class page!
Welcome to our class page! My name is Miss Godbeer and I am the class teacher based in Avocets full time. We also have Mrs Vanderford who covers my teacher time out of class on a Wednesday afternoon. As classroom support, we have Mrs Grocock.
On this page, I will outline what our Spring Term 2 curriculum looks like. If you have any questions about this or anything else, please do not hesitate to contact me; my door is always open. Otherwise, please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
This half term, we will be reading two different in our whole class reads. Firstly, we will be focusing on poetry from the fantastic book ‘Cloud Busting’ by Malorie Blackman. After this, we will be moving onto ‘Bill’s New Frock’ by Anne Fine. This story is about a young boy, Bill Simpson, who wakes up one morning to find he has transformed into a girl.
In English this term, we will be starting with letter writing, based on the story ‘The Day the Crayons Quit’ by Drew Daywalt. Once this unit is completed, we will be moving onto poetry for the rest of the half term.
The Year 4 and Year 5 pupils may sometimes be taught in separate maths groups, but most lessons will be taught together as a class. The children will all cover the appropriate content for their year group and some children will benefit from some extra maths support in inventions. This half term in Maths, we will be focusing on finishing multiplication and division before moving onto fractions, decimals and percentages. Times tables will be taught throughout all areas of learning discretely as well as ensuring practice time is given, especially for the Year 4’s, ready for their Multiplication Tables Check (MTC) in June 2024.
Our Science unit this half term will be, grouping and classifying. Classification is the arrangement of living and non-living things into categories and learning from previous units will support the initial understanding of classifying. The children will learn single-stage classification and then onto multi-stage classification. They will then move onto looking at the classification of living things, such as animals.
Our Geography unit is centred around the project of ‘Misty Mountain, Winding River’. We will carry on our learning, moving on from rivers to more in depth understanding of mountains, understanding the altitudinal zones, contour lines and different types of mountains.
Design and Technology
This half term, our Design and Technology unit of work will be ‘Functional and Fancy Fabrics’. The artist we will be focusing on is the famous William Morris who is one of the artists to have started the Arts and Crafts movement in the 1860s. The children will have the opportunity to make their very own William Morris inspired fabric.
Avocets PE days are: Mondays and Wednesdays.
In French this half term, we will be focusing on the unit ‘Family’. The children will learn how to tell somebody in French, all about their family life. This will support their learning in the growing connection with a primary school in France.
Last half term, we began our exciting music project with Miss Patchett and some very special visitors. This half term, we will be performing our masterpiece to an audience, including lots of other schools from Ivy Education Trust.
In RE this term, we will be looking at the overriding question ‘How do Christians decide how to live?’. This unit will allow the children to think more about Christianity and how Christians choose to live their lives, following a religion.
In PSHE, we use the scheme Jigsaw. This half term, we will be focusing on the puzzle ‘Healthy Me’ which is about supporting the children’s self-esteem and confidence as well as making healthy lifestyle choices.
