Welcome to our class page! My name is Miss Godbeer and I am the class teacher based in Avocets full time. We also have Mrs Vanderford who covers my teacher time out of class on a Wednesday afternoon. As classroom support, we have Mrs Grocock.
On this page, I will outline what our Summer Term 2 curriculum looks like. If you have any questions about this or anything else, please do not hesitate to contact me; my door is always open. Otherwise, please email admin@starcross-primary.devon.sch.uk
Reading
This half term, we will continue to read ‘A Word in Your Ear’ by Tony Ross before moving onto ‘Millions’ by Frank Cottrell Boyce.
English
In English this term, we will be continuing our newspaper reports, based on the discovery of an Ancient Sumer city. Then, we will move onto a poetry unit.
Maths
The Year 4 and Year 5 pupils may sometimes be taught in separate maths groups, but most lessons will be taught together as a class. The children will all cover the appropriate content for their year group and some children will benefit from some extra maths support in inventions. This half term in Maths, we will be focusing on finishing decimals and money before moving onto statistics and properties of shapes. We will finish the year by looking at position and direction.
Science
Our Science unit this half term will be, electrical circuits and conductors. This unit will teach children about electrical appliances and safety. They will construct simple series circuits and name their parts and functions, including switches, wires and cells. They will investigate electrical conductors and insulators and identify common features of conductors. It will also teach the children about programmable devices. They will combine their learning to design and make a nightlight.
Geography
Our History unit is centred on the project called ‘Interconnected World’. This unit will teach the children about compass points and four and six-figure grid references. They will identify physical features in the United Kingdom and learn about the National Rail and canal networks. The children will conduct an enquiry to prove a hypothesis, gathering data from maps and surveys before drawing conclusions.
Design and Technology
This half term, our Design and Technology unit of work will be ‘Tomb builders’. This unit will teach children about simple machines, including wheels, axles, inclined planes, pulleys and levers, exploring how they helped ancient builders to lift and move heavy loads.
PE
Avocets PE days are: Mondays and Wednesdays.
French
In French this half term, we will be focusing on the unit ‘Romans’. Through the medium of this familiar period of history, children will be taught the skills to understand slightly longer and more complicated text in French.
RE
In RE this term, we will be looking at the overriding question ‘Why is the Torah so important to Jewish people?’ This unit will allow the children to think more about a different religion and how they choose to live.
PSHE
In PSHE, we use the scheme Jigsaw. This half term, we will be focusing on the puzzle ‘Changing Me’. To ensure age appropriate content, the children will be taught in year groups for this unit of work.
