Miss O Godbeer
Welcome to our class page!
Welcome to our class page! My name is Miss Godbeer and I am the class teacher based in Avocets full time. We also have Mrs Vanderford who covers my teacher time out of class on a Wednesday afternoon. As classroom support, we have Mrs Grocock.
On this page, I will outline what our Summer Term 1 curriculum looks like. If you have any questions about this or anything else, please do not hesitate to contact me; my door is always open. Otherwise, please email admin@starcross-primary.devon.sch.uk
Reading
This half term, we will be reading two different in our whole class reads. Firstly, we will be reading the book ‘Secret of a Sun King’ by Emma Carrol before moving onto ‘A Word in Your Ear’ by Tony Ross.
English
In English this term, we will be finishing our free-verse poetry unit before moving on a fiction based unit. In History, we are focusing on Ancient Civilisations so our writing unit will be based around this. The children will be writing their own story by creating a hero, monster and setting, based on Theseus: Hero of Athens.
Maths
The Year 4 and Year 5 pupils may sometimes be taught in separate maths groups, but most lessons will be taught together as a class. The children will all cover the appropriate content for their year group and some children will benefit from some extra maths support in inventions. This half term in Maths, we will be focusing on finishing fractions, before moving onto decimals, percentages and time. Times tables will be taught throughout all areas of learning discretely as well as ensuring practice time is given, especially for the Year 4’s, ready for their Multiplication Tables Check (MTC) in June 2024.
Science
Our Science unit this half term will be, electrical circuits and conductors. This unit will teach children about electrical appliances and safety. They will construct simple series circuits and name their parts and functions, including switches, wires and cells. They will investigate electrical conductors and insulators and identify common features of conductors. It will also teach the children about programmable devices. They will combine their learning to design and make a nightlight.
History
Our History unit is centred on the project called ‘Ancient Civilisations’. This project teaches children about the history of two of the world’s first ancient civilisations: ancient Sumer and the Indus Valley civilisation. Children will learn about the rise, life, achievements and eventual end of both civilisations.
Art
This half term, our Art unit of work will be ‘Statues, statuettes and figurines’. This unit will teach the children about the 3D representation of the human form, including statues, statuettes and figurines. They will study examples from ancient civilisations, and use their clay skills to create a Sumer style figurine.
PE
Avocets PE days are: Mondays and Wednesdays.
French
In French this half term, we will be focusing on the unit ‘Romans. Through the medium of this familiar period of history, children will be taught the skills to understand slightly longer and more complicated text in French.
RE
In RE this term, we will be looking at the overriding question ‘For Christians, what kind of king is Jesus?’ This unit will allow the children to think more about Christianity and the kind of King they wanted Jesus to be.
PSHE
In PSHE, we use the scheme Jigsaw. This half term, we will be focusing on the puzzle ‘Relationships’ which includes children’s understanding of money, living in the wider world and the environment they live in.
