Welcome to the Curlews class page
Miss O Patchett
Miss Patchett teaches in Curlews on Mondays and Tuesday mornings, and Miss Hirst teaches from Tuesday afternoons to Friday each week. Mrs Stockham also works in our class. Miss Hirst has been teaching in Year 2 for quite a while and she loves it! Miss Patchett has started working in Year 2 this year, and she particularly enjoys teaching Science and Music.
In Year 2, the children develop their confidence and fluency in reading and writing, and use phonics to support them. We are using Read Write Inc. to teach phonics, and this supports the children with their reading and spelling skills. We have daily Maths lessons, and we also have a ’10 minute Maths’ session most days, to help with understanding key facts, confidence and fluency.
We love seeing the progress the children make in all areas over the year, from their achievements in lessons, to their growing confidence and independence.
This term, our English will include fiction and non-fiction texts, such as ‘Previously’ by Allan Ahlberg, and ‘The Dragon Machine’ by Helen Ward. We also have a focus on both spelling and handwriting skills, as well as developing strategies for independent writing.
Our Geography topic is ‘Coastline’, and we will be learning about the physical and human features of coastal regions across the United Kingdom, as well as thinking about coastal features around Starcross and the local area. We will carry out fieldwork out in the village.
Our Technology topic ‘Beach hut’ links to this. We will learn about making and strengthening structures, including different ways of joining materials.
In Science, we are learning about the growth of plants from seeds and bulbs. We observe the growth of plants, recording changes over time and identifying what plants need to grow and stay healthy.
Our Art topic ‘Flowerhead’ focuses on the visual elements of flowers, including shape, texture, colour, pattern and form. We also explore various artistic methods, including drawing, printmaking and 3-D forms.
